To meet the demands of the Next Generation Science standards, students must grasp and clearly communicate complex scientific relationships and processes. This workshop provides support for teachers to help all students meet this high bar. WIT for Science is focused on the foundational sentence-level strategies that form the heart of the WIT approach and that are particularly impactful in science. WIT sentence strategies are high-leverage because they support thinking, content learning and reading comprehension simultaneously – in addition to clear speaking and writing. They are especially powerful for English learners because they teach students how the English language works and for special education students because they provide access to complex content to all learners. We are not trying to turn science teachers into writing teachers. Rather, we aim to develop science teachers’ expertise using WIT in support of standards-aligned science objectives.
This workshop is appropriate for teachers of Science for all students in grades 3-12. Special attention is paid to designing entry points for students with varying levels of proficiency in English.
